This Modern dance class is oriented toward movers who are new or returning to dancing. Drawing from traditional and contemporary forms, dancers will expand their kinesthetic and proprioceptive awarenesses through practice of across the floor and center combinations, improvisation, and floor work. In an inclusive, body-positive atmosphere, we suspend, release, sweat, and find the floor.
About the instructor:
Sofia Engelman is a dance artist based in Northampton. Sofia has presented works, including ongoing High Maintenance studies and collaborations with partner Em Papineau, at venues such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Institute for Contemporary Art/Boston, Judson Church, FRESH Festival, EstroGenius Festival, the Dance Complex, 10 Forward, and SCDT. Sofia has developed dances through residencies at The Living Room, Ponderosa, the Dance Complex, Denmark Arts Center, Green Street Studios, and SCDT. Sofia received a BA with highest honors in Dance from Smith College, where she was the recipient of an Excellence in Dance Studies award. Sofia is the Ad/Marketing Manager and Administrative Assistant at Contact Quarterly and teaches choreography, technique, and dance fitness classes regularly to children and adults.
