FREE AND OPEN TO ALL. Nell Painter (the painter formerly known as the historian Nell Irvin Painter, Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, Princeton University, author of The History of White People and Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over, and holder of a 2011 MFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design) lives and works in Newark, New Jersey. She works between the hand and the computer in a process that is manual + digital and that often recalls her former vocation in meaning and text. In 2018 the American Historical Association awarded her scholarly excellence, and in 2019 her memoir was a finalist for the American Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography.
