WHAT: SHELTER curated by B.Z. Reily and Nan Fleming
Artist Reception: Friday, June 8: 5-8 pm, Norhtampton Arts Night Out
SHELTER, curated by B.Z. Reily and Nan Fleming, will include eight Pioneer Valley women artists who use recycled or re-purposed materials in their work. Participating artists include Pat Bennett, Harriet Diamond, Nan Fleming, Heather Hall, Amy Johnquest, Louise Laplante, B.Z. Reily and Abby Reiser.
This project and installation will explore the timely topic of SHELTER using metal, clay, wood, paper and fibers. There are many ways to think about shelter – besides the general definition of housing – there is protection, refuge, asylum, sanctuary and safety to consider. With the wide range of materials and techniques used by the artists, this project will be both diverse and unified by the commitment to use common, scrap or unusual objects in innovative ways.
SHELTER will invite participation and community engagement with interactive public events, including fundraising for a local organization dedicated to shelter.
Stories of Shelter
In conjunction with the Shelter Show, there will be a public special event on Thursday, June 21st, from 5:30 to 7:30 in the gallery. Local writers and storyteller will read or tell stories related to the broad definition of shelter. Participating artists are Julie Wagner, John Porcino, Kathy Brown, Maya Rivera, and Sandy Diaz. John Reily (Johnny Memphis).
Free and open to the public
A.P.E.‘s third season of summer projects continues to expand the understanding of a contemporary art gallery as an active space within the community. A.P.E.’s current location in the center of Northampton, easily accessible to artists and audience alike, provides opportunities for innovative programming and increases the presence of contemporary arts within a community. ARC.18 consists of four distinct projects that run from June through August, 2018.
