“The Sacred Image in Ordinary Time” curated by Rose Hatem ’20

Hatem’s statement: Western art has been intrinsically tied to Christianity since the religion began. Iconic images such as the Madonna and Child, the Crucifixion, or the Pieta carry such enormous cultural weight that they have become archetypes which can be invoked beyond the limits of explicitly religious art. This exhibit explores the visual language of Christianity, questioning to what extent an image’s power is derived from understanding its religious and historical context and to what extent power is intrinsic to the image.
