The Shoestring is an independent web magazine covering culture and politics in Western Mass. We want to shine a critical light on the money, colonialism and settler mentalities that continue to quietly turn the wheels of our local war economy while also giving support to many brave activists, artists and citizens who strive to make a better community.
We aim to create journalism that respects your intelligence and challenges power. That is why a couple of young people with (old and dying) laptops and not much of a future in for-profit journalism are starting The Shoestring. This new publication aims to create a different type of journalism than what currently exists in the area. Rather than respond to the news cycle, we aim to scrape beneath it and tell stories that are of, by and for the people- stories that make enemies in high places.
